Notes From the Woods: A Scripture

I found myself there, surrounded

in communal worship, and the woods spoke

to me, she said:

shush dear, just walk. we reveal ourselves

when we’re meant to -

see, that wave from the leaves

or the slither of snakes and lizards -

go ahead, tap that mushroom on the

head, and look for our present

blessings, quite, and notice the whimsy in

our Liturgy.

And then he said,

“I think we learn more than we hurt.”

And my shoulders softened

my heart melted

and I relaxed into his arms

to kiss his face

and love him.

II

Seeing the light come through

my bathroom window.

It sparkles and looks like a

mosaic of sun or moon light.

I think sometimes we just have to sit and wait. Let the seeds do the work, which we have already planted. They need time to sow before the roots begin to grow

flowing beneath the earth, unseen, unheard. And then- we can see the tiniest of green popping up out of the soil bringing light into the world. Then we can act. When the light has pushed through the black. Until then, we wait.

because sometimes, the seeds don't take, we must bend down, hands digging again, to plant new seeds- start over again.

Everything around me disgusts me with its beauty.

The love I feel is deafening.

The loudest noise I could ever feel.

You know, like that noise that goes down into the depths of your heart?

That terror that arises because to feel so deeply can be dangerous.
